The Sticky Humiliation

The high school cafeteria was always a battlefield of social hierarchies, but on a Tuesday afternoon, the tension reached a boiling point. Cole, a quiet and reserved senior wearing his favorite patterned hoodie, sat at a corner table. His eyes were glued to his laptop screen as he frantically typed up his final history essay. He just wanted to get through the day unnoticed.

Suddenly, the ambient chatter of the cafeteria died down. A heavy shadow fell over Cole's table. Before he could even look up, a cold, sticky cascade of dark soda drenched his head, soaking his hair and dripping down his face onto his keyboard. The crowd gasped, followed by a wave of cruel, stifled laughter.

Standing behind him was Austin, the school's star athlete, wearing his signature black and white varsity jacket. Austin held the empty cup with a malicious grin plastered across his face. He leaned down, his voice dripping with condescension.

"What's the matter, boy? Cat got your tongue?"

Cole sat frozen for a few agonizing seconds. The liquid seeped through his hood, cold against his neck. But he didn't cry, and he didn't scramble to clean his laptop. Slowly, he opened his eyes. Underneath the wet fabric of his hood, his gaze was filled with a quiet, burning fury that made Austin's smile falter slightly.

Cole pushed his chair back and stood up, towering over the table to face his tormentor directly. He didn't shout. He didn't raise his fists. He simply stared into Austin's eyes and asked firmly:

"Are you done?"

Austin, trying to maintain his tough-guy persona in front of the watching crowd, shrugged smugly.

"Good."

Cole wiped a drop of soda from his eyelashes. His voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried a terrifying weight that echoed across the silent room.

"Now it's my turn."
