A Bully Shoved a Defenseless Girl, but Her Protector Was Already Waiting
Previously: When Luke shoved Grace to the cold ground of the school parking lot, he thought he was untouchable. He didn't expect Austin to step out of the shadows with a secret that would ruin him.
The Confrontation Escalates
Luke stepped back a half-inch, trying to reclaim his dominant posture. He puffed out his chest, gesturing to his letterman jacket as if it were a shield of armor.
"Who the hell are you?"
Luke spat, his voice cracking slightly before he regained his bravado.
"You don't belong here, old man. Get out of my face before I make you."
Austin didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, knowing smile touched his lips. He reached down, gently helping Grace to her feet and gathering the rest of her damp books. Once she was safely behind him, Austin turned his full attention back to Luke.
"I know exactly who you are, Luke Vance,"
Austin said, his voice carrying clearly over the silent crowd.
"And I know exactly how your father paid for that flashy car of yours and that expensive jacket."
Luke’s face paled slightly, though he tried to hide it behind a mask of anger. "You don't know anything about my family," he hissed.
"Don't I?"
Austin countered, stepping closer.
"Your father is Richard Vance. The man who forged the foreclosure documents on my family's property—and Grace's family's land—to build his new luxury strip mall. My father died trying to fight that lawsuit, and your family got rich off our tragedy."
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd of students. The rumor of the Vance family's shady business dealings had always floated around town, but no one had ever dared to say it out loud, let alone to Luke's face.
Austin pulled a thick manila envelope from the pocket of his grey hoodie. "I’ve spent the last three years in the military saving every dime, and the last six months working with an investigator. I have the original deeds right here, Luke. The ones your father thought he burned."
Luke stared at the envelope, the arrogance draining from his face, replaced by a sudden, paralyzing fear. He realized his perfect world was about to crumble.
