The biting winter wind whipped around St. Jude's Cathedral, swirling snow into a frenzy as dusk painted the sky in hues of deep cyan and dying amber. The ancient limestone steps, usually a solemn pathway, were now treacherous sheets of ice, dusted with fresh, powdery snow. Gargoyles, draped like spectral figures in white, seemed to weep frozen tears. On these steps stood Damian Knox, a vision of cruel privilege. His blonde hair was perfectly styled, his porcelain skin flushed not from the cold, but from an inner arrogance. He loomed over Ruth, a petite scholarship student, her face a mask of terror and despair. Her chapped lips trembled, tear tracks visible on her pale cheeks, her damp chestnut hair clinging to her forehead beneath a worn beanie. She clutched her textbooks to her chest like a shield, her knuckles white and raw against the worn fabric of her oversized thrift coat.

The Cruel Encounter

Damian Knox: "Know your place, scholarship charity case."

Damian’s voice, sharp and venomous, cut through the whistling wind. Ruth flinched, her breath hitching, tears welling in her eyes. She remained silent, paralyzed by his intimidating presence. He took a step closer, his midnight-navy cashmere coat a stark contrast to her threadbare olive wool. Then, with a vicious sweep of his hand, he struck her across the face. The sickening crack of flesh against flesh echoed in the charged air, followed by the clatter of her textbooks scattering across the icy stone. Ruth cried out, stumbling backward, her head snapping sideways. An angry red welt bloomed on her pale cheekbone. Damian sneered, his eyes glinting with malice.

Damian Knox: "Crawl in the dirt where you belong!"

Ruth gasped, her eyes squeezed shut against the searing pain and shock. She fell to the slush-covered steps, the cold seeping into her bones. Damian stood over her, triumphant, his hands casually stuffed into his pockets. He threw his head back and laughed, the sound hollow and cruel against the backdrop of the distant church bells. The snow swirled around them, a silent, indifferent witness to the unfolding humiliation.

Damian Knox: "Nobody in this city is coming to save a beggar."

Ruth curled into herself, cradling her burning cheek, silent sobs wracking her small frame. Her eyes widened, filled with a helpless, crushing humiliation. She was utterly alone, a beggar indeed in the eyes of this privileged world. The cold seeped deeper, mirroring the chill in her heart.
