Safely inside Richard's luxury sedan, the children finally began to relax. Toby clutched a warm bag of pastries, gently feeding his sister before taking a bite himself. Richard watched them through the rearview mirror, his heart aching with a mixture of grief and sudden, overwhelming hope. Once they arrived at his sprawling estate, his housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, immediately ushered the children to a warm bath and prepared a hearty meal.

Later that evening, as Lily slept soundly on the plush guest bed, Richard sat with Toby in the library. He gently asked about the silver locket around the boy's neck.

"My dad gave it to me,"

Toby explained softly.

"He said it belonged to our grandmother. He told me if we were ever in trouble, to look for a man named Richard. But we didn't know where to find you."

Tears slipped down Richard's cheeks. Thomas had never stopped loving him, despite their bitter parting. Toby explained that Thomas had succumbed to a severe illness a month prior, leaving them with nothing. The landlord had evicted them, forcing them onto the streets. "You're safe now," Richard promised, pulling his nephew into a tight embrace.

But the peace was short-lived. The following morning, the loud chime of the front doorbell shattered the quiet. Richard opened the door to find two police officers and a stern-faced woman holding a briefcase. She introduced herself as Amanda Vance, a court-appointed guardian.

"We received a report of unauthorized custody,"

Amanda said coldly.

"According to the state, these children belong in foster care under my supervision. Hand them over, Mr. Sterling, or face kidnapping charges."
