With Mark safely handcuffed and dragged down the corridor, Sarah returned to the room, her heart hammering against her ribs. She rushed to Chloe’s bedside, checking her vitals and calling for a nurse to tend to the shaken woman. But as the medical staff rushed in, Chloe grabbed Sarah’s sleeve, her grip surprisingly strong and desperate. Her voice was a terrified whisper, raw and trembling, barely audible over the beeping of the monitors.

"He wasn't trying to kill me because he hates me," Chloe sobbed, her eyes wide with terror. "He was trying to stop me from talking to you. He knows about David."

Sarah froze. David was her own brother, a decorated lieutenant in the very same precinct she commanded. For months, Sarah had been investigating a leak within the department—a shadow operative who was selling confidential witness data to local syndicates. Chloe had been the key witness in a high-profile trafficking case before her car was run off the road just two days ago. It had been ruled an accident, but now, the pieces were starting to align in the most horrific way imaginable.

Leaving Chloe in the care of the medical team, Sarah marched down to the holding cell where Mark was being detained. He sat slumped against the wall, a cynical smirk plastered across his bruised face. When Sarah demanded to know his connection to Chloe, he let out a harsh, mocking laugh that echoed off the cold concrete walls.

"You really don't know, do you, Captain?" Mark sneered, leaning forward so his chains rattled. "I didn't run her off the road. I was hired to clean up the mess. And the man who paid me used a police-issued encrypted phone. Your brother's phone."
