A Desperate Act of Mercy

The viewing room of the Oakridge Funeral Home was suffocatingly quiet, filled with the heavy scent of white lilies and the soft, mourning whispers of the elite. Cream-colored paneled walls and a pristine white fireplace mantelpiece framed the tragic scene. On ornate pedestals, large white floral arrangements stood like silent sentinels around a polished white coffin with gold handles. Beneath a crystal chandelier that cast a warm, mocking glow over the green carpeted floor, the family of Clara Vance gathered to say their final goodbyes.

But for Maria, Clara’s dedicated live-in caregiver, the atmosphere was thick with a terrifying realization. Just minutes earlier, while adjusting the collar of Clara's burial dress, she had felt it: a microscopic, warm puff of air against her fingertips. Clara was not dead. She was trapped in a state of deep, chemically induced paralysis. Maria had tried to warn Clara’s son, Marcus, but his cold, dismissive threats confirmed her worst fears. Marcus had poisoned his own mother to inherit her vast estate, and he was rushing the burial to hide the evidence.

With the funeral director preparing to seal the casket forever, Maria knew she had only seconds. Desperate and terrified, she ran to the hallway, smashed the glass of the emergency fire box, and grabbed the heavy iron axe. Marching back into the viewing room, she ignored the gasps of the horrified mourners.

"What?" Maria screamed, her voice cracking with hysterical grief as she faced the shocked crowd.

She raised the axe high above her head and swung it down with all her might. The heavy blade sliced through the air, slamming into the polished wooden lid. Splinters flew toward the camera as the wood fractured violently. Marcus lunged forward, his eyes wide with horror as he screamed, "Oh my God! What are you doing?"

Maria gripped the axe handle, tears streaming down her face. "Have you lost your mind?" she sobbed. But before Marcus could grab her, a weak, desperate scratching sound echoed from inside the shattered coffin. Marcus froze, his face turning pale as he yelled, "She's not dead!"
