Chloe tried to pull away, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't want to hear any lies or excuses. But the sheer terror in Emily's eyes made her hesitate. Emily was trembling just as violently as she was.

"What are you talking about?" Chloe demanded, her voice shaking. "You're in my bed, Emily! How dare you try to spin this!"

"Mark has been drugging you, Chloe. The fatigue, the dizziness, the headaches... it’s not an illness. He’s been putting liquid sedatives into your evening tea. I found the prescription bottles in his car last week. He’s trying to make you look unstable so he can claim sole control over your family trust."

The words felt like ice water poured down Chloe's spine. She stared at her best friend, trying to find a sign of deception, but there was only raw, terrified honesty. Emily explained that she had come to the house while Mark was supposed to be at work, searching for the hidden chemicals to prove her suspicions to the police. She had heard a noise downstairs and, panicking, had jumped under the duvet to hide.
