I Followed the Girl Into the Shadows, and the Truth Unraveled Like a Silk Thread

The corridor was dimly lit, the walls lined with portraits of Sterlings long dead, their painted eyes seeming to judge me as I passed. I could hear Lily's footsteps ahead, and then a voice—a woman's voice—soft and familiar, calling her name.

"Lily, sweetheart, come here. Don't be scared."

That voice. I hadn't heard it in fifteen years, but I recognized it instantly. It was the voice of the woman who had nearly destroyed my marriage. The woman Richard swore he had cut out of his life forever. Her name was Celeste.

I pressed myself against the wall, my heart hammering against my ribs. I peered around the corner and saw Celeste kneeling in front of Lily, smoothing the girl's hair. She looked older, tired, but unmistakably the same woman whose photograph I had found in Richard's study years ago.

"You're safe now," Celeste whispered. "No one will hurt you. I promise."

I stepped out of the shadows. "Celeste."

She looked up, her face going pale. "Victoria."

Lily shrank behind Celeste's legs, staring at me with wide, frightened eyes.

"What is this?" I demanded. "What are you doing here? And why is this child—why does she look like—"

"She looks like your daughter," Celeste said quietly. "I know."

My breath caught in my throat. My daughter, Emily, had died of leukemia when she was seven. The grief had nearly broken me. And now, seeing Lily, with the same auburn hair and the same dimple on her left cheek, was like staring at a ghost.

"Who is she?" I asked, my voice trembling.

Celeste stood up, her expression unreadable. "She's Richard's daughter."

"I know that," I said, my anger flaring. "I know he had an affair with you. But why is she here? Why is she hiding?"

"Because Richard doesn't want anyone to know the real reason he brought her here," Celeste said. "He didn't bring her for me. He brought her for you."

I stared at her, uncomprehending. "For me?"

"Look at her face, Victoria. Really look."

I knelt down, meeting Lily's eyes. And then I saw it—the shape of her nose, the curve of her jaw. It was like looking at a photo of myself as a child.

"She's not Richard's daughter," Celeste said softly. "She's yours."

"That's impossible," I breathed. "I only had two children. Emily and James."

"You had a third," Celeste said. "Fifteen years ago, you gave birth to a baby girl. You were unconscious from a difficult labor. Richard and Eleanor took her. They told you she was stillborn."

The room spun around me. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of lies.

"Why?" I choked out.

"Because you were becoming too powerful," Celeste said. "You had just won a major lawsuit against a corrupt senator. Richard's family was afraid you would uncover their own secrets. They needed a way to control you. A child they could use as leverage."

"That's insane," I said. "They wouldn't do that."

"They did," Celeste insisted. "And when I found out, I couldn't stay silent. I took Lily and ran. But Eleanor found us. She's been threatening me to keep quiet, using Lily as a pawn."

I looked at Lily, who was now crying softly. "I want my mommy," she whimpered.

"I'm your mommy," I said, my voice cracking.

And then I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to see Richard standing at the end of the corridor, his face a mask of fury.

"Victoria," he said, his tone cold. "Step away from the girl."
