Unable to leave the boy on the freezing street, Charlotte hurried both children into a quiet, warm diner around the corner. Over hot chocolate and warm meals, the contrast between the two boys was heartbreaking. Lucas sat upright in his tailored suit, while Toby devoured his food with desperate hunger. Her wealthy ex-husband's family had heavily funded that clinic, and she recalled how eager they had been to handle all the medical arrangements. Slowly, the puzzle pieces fell into place.
