The Antidote and the Accusation

Just as Vance moved to inject the epinephrine, Sarah moved with blinding speed. Her calloused hand clamped onto his wrist with the force of a steel trap, twisting his arm with a sickening thud. The auto-injector flew from his grasp, skittering across the wet floor. Vance staggered back, his haughty composure shattered, his eyes wide with shock and humiliation as he collided with a dangling anchor chain.

"Touch that needle to his chest and you kill him—it's dockside blue-ringed octopus neurotoxin, ascending motor blockade!"

Sarah's voice boomed with cold authority, cutting through the tavern's oppressive atmosphere. Vance could only stare, paralyzed by a fear he'd never known. Sarah didn't waste another second. With a swift, practiced motion, she snapped the neck of an antidote ampoule. A single droplet of blood welled on her knuckle, unnoticed as she expertly drew the clear, life-saving fluid into a syringe. Her movements were precise, economical, honed by countless emergencies.

"Thirty seconds to brain death—administering intravenous acetylcholinesterase inhibitor directly into his external jugular!"

Her words were a rapid, urgent breath, her focus absolute. Vance, meanwhile, could only swallow convulsively, cold sweat beading on his brow, his Adam's apple bobbing in silent terror. The stark reality of his near-fatal mistake was crashing down upon him. He, the esteemed city physician, had almost killed the governor's son with his ignorance, while the 'barnyard' doctor possessed the knowledge to save him. The chasm between their worlds had never been more apparent, or more critical.
