Previously: A high-society doctor's contempt for a rural colleague's muddy boots turns to shock when a governor's son collapses. Only the 'quack' can save him, exposing the city doctor's arrogance and ignorance.

The Rural Quack's Cure

Vance’s panicked attempt to inject Julian with epinephrine was a disastrously misguided impulse. “Stop!” I shouted, my voice cutting through the showroom’s opulent quiet. Adrenaline surged as I sprinted forward, my boots slapping against the slick obsidian. With a speed born of countless emergencies, I deflected Vance’s arm. The auto-injector skittered away, a useless piece of plastic against the unfolding crisis. Vance stared, his hand stinging, his jaw slack with shock. The meticulously crafted facade of his superiority had cracked.

“Epi will trigger fatal ventricular fibrillation in ten seconds,” I stated, my eyes locked on Julian’s terrifyingly constricted pupils and the rapid fasciculations rippling beneath his skin. “Look at him—it’s rare aconitine neurotoxin!”

Vance remained frozen, his eyes wide with a dawning horror that warred with his ingrained arrogance. He couldn’t comprehend it. The rural doctor, the one he’d just so casually dismissed, was diagnosing a condition far beyond his immediate grasp. I didn’t wait for his understanding. My medical kit was already open. The familiar feel of glass ampoules, the precise draw of atropine and pralidoxime into a high-gauge syringe – these were actions ingrained in my muscle memory. Each movement was economical, practiced, honed by necessity. Julian’s breathing grew shallower, his body tensing for the inevitable respiratory arrest.

“Twenty seconds until total diaphragmatic paralysis,” I informed the stunned onlookers, my focus absolute as I prepared to administer the antidote. “He absorbed it through the car’s contaminated leather steering wheel.”

The governor, alerted by the commotion, burst through the showroom doors, his face etched with panic. He saw his son, pale and convulsing, and then he saw me, a stranger in muddy boots, working with a speed and precision that belied my appearance. Vance, meanwhile, stood uselessly, his face ashen, his professional confidence utterly shattered. He had the pedigree, the title, the expensive suit, but when faced with a true medical crisis, he was paralyzed by his own ignorance and arrogance.
