Previously: When a smug young marksman ridiculed 65-year-old Shirley at the shooting range, he had no idea who she really was—until her first shot left the entire room in absolute silence.

A Legend Unmasked

Charles pushed past the security barrier, his face pale.

"Shirley Vance?"
he called out, his voice echoing over the murmurs of the crowd.
"As in, the Shirley 'The Ghost' Vance who set the national tactical record in 1989?"

The entire room fell into a stunned silence. The name was legendary in competitive shooting circles. Shirley Vance was the first female tactical instructor for the state police, a marksman who had vanished from the public eye decades ago after a tragic accident took her husband, who was also her spotter. Her records had stood untouched for over thirty years.

Connor’s face flushed red, his smug grin instantly evaporating.

"That's ancient history,"
he stammered, trying to regain his footing in front of his sponsors.
"The equipment was different back then. The standards were lower. I’m the champion now."

Shirley turned her calm, grey eyes toward him.

"The standards haven't changed, young man. Only the respect for the craft has,"
she said softly. Connor, feeling cornered by the whispers of the crowd, made a desperate move. He challenged her to a direct, sudden-death shootout.
"If you're really the legend they say you are, prove it right now. One target, maximum distance, rapid transition. If you lose, you walk out and never come back."

Shirley looked at the young man, then at Charles, who was watching with bated breath.

"I will accept your challenge on one condition,"
Shirley replied, her voice firm.
"When I win, you will donate your entire season's sponsorship purse to the local veterans' charity, and you will personally apologize to every senior member of this club for your disrespect."
Connor, confident in his modern high-tech gear, nodded quickly.
"Deal,"
he snapped.
