The Vault's Secret

Amber's knees buckled, but Cornelius's grip held her upright. "You planned this all along?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "You knew?"

"I knew the moment you started whispering to your lover on the garden phone," he said, his tone calm and devastating. "I knew when you tried to poison my tea — only Hannah swapped the cups."

Hannah looked up at her grandfather, her eyes wide with surprise. She hadn't known about the poison. She'd only wanted to protect him.

Amber's face contorted with rage. "You can't prove anything!" she spat. But Cornelius gestured to the tablet, and a video played — Amber's voice clear as day, plotting his death.

"That's enough for the police," he said. The front doors burst open, and uniformed officers flooded in, their boots thundering across the floor.

"Take the ring off now," Cornelius commanded, nodding to Amber's engagement diamond. "It was my late wife's. It was never meant for you."

Amber sobbed, clawing at the ring as officers snapped handcuffs around her wrists. "You'll regret this!" she screamed, but her words fell on deaf ears.

Hannah watched, trembling, as her grandfather wrapped a warm arm around her shoulders. "You're safe now, my brave girl," he murmured, pressing a kiss to her hair.

But as the officers dragged Amber away, she turned back with a venomous smile. "You think you've won?" she hissed. "Your own daughter — Hannah's mother — she's the one who put me up to this."

Cornelius froze. His daughter, Eleanor, had been estranged for years. But this? This was beyond betrayal. He looked at Hannah, whose lip quivered at the mention of her mother.

"Take her to processing," he ordered the officers, his voice steady. Then he knelt before Hannah, taking her small hands in his. "It's just us now. I promise, I will never let anyone hurt you again."

Hannah nodded, tears streaming down her face. She signed, "I love you, Grandpa." He signed back, "I love you too, my little warrior." The officers left, and the parlor fell silent, but the storm was far from over.
