Previously: When Cadet Carter was handed a mysterious brown envelope at dusk, she expected her test results. Instead, a decades-old family conspiracy began to unravel.

The Midnight Break-In

The weight of the silver key card burned in Elena’s pocket as she lay awake in her barracks. She knew the risks. If she was caught, she would not only be expelled from the academy, but she could also face military prison. Yet, the memory of her father’s tired smile and the sudden, mysterious way he had vanished from her life fueled her resolve. She couldn't let his legacy remain dragged through the dirt.

At midnight, the academy grounds were silent, save for the hum of the perimeter generators. Slipping past the security patrols, Elena met Captain Vance near the administrative building. The building housed the central archives, where the oldest and most classified records of the academy were kept under lock and key.

"The vault requires two-factor authentication," Vance whispered as they slipped through a side maintenance door.
"A key card, which I have, and a biometric scan from a direct blood relative of the original archivist. Your father."

Elena realized then why Vance had sought her out. Her father had designed the security system decades ago, registering his own daughter's biometrics as an emergency override. Trembling, she pressed her thumb against the cold glass scanner. The device beeped, turning green, and the heavy steel door clicked open.

Inside, the air was stale and smelled of old paper. Elena scrambled to the secure filing cabinet, her fingers flying through the folders until she found the one labeled Project Phoenix. She pulled out a microfiche tape containing the original, unredacted transcripts of her father's final mission.

Suddenly, the harsh glare of overhead fluorescent lights flooded the room. The door slammed shut behind them.

"I must thank you, Cadet Carter," a cold, mocking voice echoed. General Sterling, the academy’s powerful superintendent, stepped out from the shadows, flanked by two armed security guards.
"You’ve saved me the trouble of finding that tape myself. Now, both you and the Captain will be charged with espionage."
