He Complained About A Passenger Kicking His Seat, Realizing It Was His Deployed Wife
Previously: When a tired father complained to a flight attendant about the passenger kicking his seat, he had no idea the annoying traveler was actually his deployed wife pulling off the ultimate surprise.
A Bitter Sweet Secret
As the airplane began its final descent, the initial euphoria of the reunion began to fade, replaced by a growing sense of unease. Mark held Sarah’s hand tightly, but he couldn't help but notice how pale she looked. Her grip was trembling, and when she reached down to adjust her duffel bag, she winced in pain. Underneath her loose tan flight suit, Mark caught a glimpse of a thick medical brace wrapped around her knee.
"Sarah, what's going on?" Mark whispered, his voice laced with sudden worry. "Your deployment wasn't supposed to end for another six months. Why are you on this flight? And what happened to your leg?"
Sarah looked down at Leo, who had finally fallen asleep in his carrier. A tear slipped down her cheek as she squeezed Mark’s hand.
"I wanted our first moment to be happy, Mark," she whispered back, her voice shaking. "But I have to tell you the truth. I didn't get sent home on leave. I'm home permanently. I was medically discharged."
Mark’s heart sank. Sarah loved her service; it was her life’s calling. He knew how much this must hurt her. She explained that during a rescue mission three weeks ago, her transport vehicle had been hit. She had managed to pull two wounded soldiers to safety, but a secondary blast had severely injured her leg and shoulder. She had kept the entire ordeal a secret, forbidding the military liaisons from calling him because she didn't want him panicking while caring for Leo alone.
But the physical pain wasn't the only thing Sarah was hiding. When the plane finally landed and they walked into the terminal, Mark noticed a stern-looking man in a tailored suit waiting near the baggage claim. He was holding a placard with Sarah’s name on it. Mark felt a chill run down his spine. Why would a lawyer be waiting for a wounded soldier?
