Previously: When Officer Sarah intervened to stop a man attacking a helpless elderly woman, she didn't expect a simple domestic dispute to unravel a decades-old family conspiracy.

The Secret in the Shroud

Richard groaned on the pavement, the wind completely knocked out of him as Officer Sarah swiftly pinned his arms behind his back and clicked the handcuffs into place. "Stay down!" she commanded, her voice ringing with authority. She then turned her attention to Martha, gently helping the trembling woman to her feet. Martha was still sobbing, her fingers still locked in a death grip around the old blue knit blanket.

Arthur, seeing the tide turn, tried to quietly slip away toward his vehicle, but Sarah’s sharp eyes caught him. "Don't even think about it, sir," she warned, pointing to the curb. "Sit down and don't move." Arthur gulped, his face turning pale as he clutched his clipboard like a shield and sat down on the grass.

As Sarah comforted Martha, she noticed something unusual. The blue knit blanket was remarkably heavy on one side, and there was a stiff, rectangular shape sewn awkwardly into the thick yarn. Richard, realizing what Sarah was looking at, began to thrash on the ground. "Don't touch that! It's mine! She stole it from my father's estate!" he screamed, his face turning purple with rage.

Sarah ignored his outbursts and looked at Martha, who nodded tearfully. "It's the truth, Officer," Martha whispered. "My late husband knew what Richard would try to do. He hid the original deed to our family home and his life insurance policy inside this blanket. Richard wanted to force me into a nursing home and sell everything. He hired Arthur to forge a fake land survey so he could claim the property was already his." Arthur, terrified of going to jail as an accomplice, immediately cracked. "I didn't know he was going to hurt her! He just paid me to sign the fake documents!" he whimpered.
