A Cold Day in the Woods

The bitter winter wind howled through the towering pines of Blackwood Forest, carrying with it a biting chill that numbed the skin. Under the overcast, slate-gray sky, the scene looked like a grim painting. Tied tightly to the rough bark of an ancient oak tree was Clara, a young blonde woman shivering in a pristine, dark-green military dress uniform. The thick hemp rope bit into her wrists, but she didn’t cry out in pain. Instead, her eyes flickered with a mixture of fear and defiance.

Standing around her were three local sheriff's deputies, their forest-green uniforms blending with the dark woods. They weren't rescuing her; they were the ones who had dragged her there. To them, this was a joke, a way to teach a 'trespasser' a lesson she would never forget.

'You a general or something, sweetheart?'

Deputy Miller, a burly man with a cruel smirk, stepped closer. His voice was mocking but cheerful, echoing off the snow-covered trees. His colleagues, Vance and Rogers, burst into loud, mocking laughter. They thought she was a pretender, a civilian playing dress-up to bypass their illegal checkpoint deep in the county woods.

Clara sobbed softly, the tears freezing on her pale cheeks. But as she wept, a strange, hysterical laugh escaped her lips. She looked at Miller, her eyes burning with a secret they couldn't possibly comprehend.

Amused by her reaction, Miller stepped even closer. He playfully covered her mouth with his gloved hand, muffling her desperate breaths. Then, he gently slid his hand up to cover her eyes and face, treating her like a child playing hide-and-seek. Vance and Rogers laughed harder, clapping each other on the back. Clara smiled through her tears, letting them enjoy their fleeting moment of dominance. She knew that every second they wasted mocking her was a second closer to their own undoing.
