Previously: A smug city doctor mocks a rural GP's attire in court, only for her to save the Governor's son from a deadly neurotoxin. The confrontation escalates into a battle of wits and backgrounds.

An Unseen Enemy

The hushed courtroom shattered with a sudden, violent jolt. Julian Sterling convulsed, his body wracked with tremors, his head crashing forward onto the heavy mahogany counsel table. A horrifying froth spilled from his lips, his skin taking on a terrifying cyanotic hue as his pupils shrunk to pinpoint dots. Panic erupted. Dr. Carter Ross, his carefully constructed composure dissolving into pure terror, recoiled as if struck. His pen clattered to the floor, his titanium spectacles slipping down his nose as his eyes widened in disbelief and fear.

"It's acute cardiac arrest! Clear the bench, he's dying!"

Ross’s voice cracked, hyperventilating, his medical expertise seemingly abandoned in the face of raw panic. But Hannah Vance, her breath hitching, remained focused. Her eyes, sharp and clinical, locked onto Julian's darkening fingernails and the disturbing rigidity of his muscles. This wasn't cardiac arrest. Not even close. While Ross floundered, Hannah sprang into action. Her mud-caked boots thudded purposefully against the polished floorboards as she charged forward, a whirlwind of focused energy.

She knelt beside the seizing young man, her weathered leather kit already open. With swift, practiced movements, she peeled back Julian's eyelid, her gaze instantly locking onto the telltale vertical nystagmus. The diagnosis flashed in her mind, a rare and deadly enemy. Turning to the stunned and horrified Carter Ross, her voice cut through the chaos, commanding and gravelly.

"Not cardiac arrest, you blind fool—it's a rare aconite neurotoxin!"

Ross stared, his face draining of all color, his jaw sagging in humiliated shock. His city-bred arrogance had blinded him completely. The poison, insidious and swift, was a challenge Hannah Vance understood. She ignored Ross’s paralyzed state and focused solely on the life hanging in the balance, her hands moving with a speed and precision that belied the chaos around them.
