Sadie recoiled slightly at the intensity in Garrett's eyes. The warm golden-hour light cast long, dramatic shadows across the dirt arena as the crowd whispered in confusion. "I... I found it in an old diary," Sadie stammered, her voice barely carrying over the quieted PA system. "In the attic of the old guest cabin my family is renting from your father. There was an old rusted music box and a handwritten journal signed by a woman named Evelyn. The song was written inside."

The name Evelyn struck Garrett like a physical blow. Fifteen years ago, his mother Evelyn had supposedly packed her bags and abandoned their family ranch, never to be heard from again. At least, that was the story his father, Silas, had drilled into him since he was ten years old. Garrett turned slowly toward his father, who was now backing away toward the stables, his face pale and sweat-beaded.

"Dad, what is going on?"

Garrett demanded, dropping the microphone. It hit the wooden stage with a loud, screeching feedback pop that echoed the tension in his chest. He marched off the stage, following Silas into the shadow of the stables, with Sadie trailing anxiously behind them.

Under the dim rafters of the barn, Silas finally broke. He confessed that Evelyn hadn't abandoned them. She had developed early-onset dementia, and in a fit of pride and shame, Silas couldn't bear the emotional toll. He had quietly sent her to a specialized care facility in the next county, telling Garrett she had run away to spare himself the shame. He had hidden her diary and her final letters to Garrett in the guest cabin attic, hoping they would be forgotten forever.
