Previously: When cowboy Wyatt publicly dared Maeve to sing for his hand in marriage, the crowd cheered. But as she took the microphone, a devastating secret threatened to tear them apart forever.

The Silent Threat

As Maeve opened her mouth, a pure, haunting melody floated through the arena. The crowd went dead silent, captivated by the raw emotion in her voice. It was fragile, scarred by the trauma of her past, but it was undeniably beautiful. Wyatt's eyes softened, a tear escaping his own eye as he realized the girl he loved was still there. But the moment of beauty was brutally cut short.

Suddenly, the microphone went dead. The guitar music faded into static. Confused murmurs rippled through the stands. Maeve looked up to see Brody, Wyatt's powerful father, standing near the sound booth with a smug expression. He slowly walked down the wooden steps and onto the dirt, stopping just inches from Maeve while Wyatt was still yards away.

"You think you can just crawl back here and ruin everything I've built?" Brody hissed, his voice low so only she could hear. "If you sing another note, I will cut off your mother's medical funding. And I will make sure the police reopen the investigation into the crashβ€”and this time, I'll make sure you take the fall instead of Luke."

Maeve's heart shattered. She looked over at Luke, Wyatt's brother, who was sitting in the front row, refusing to meet her eyes. Luke had been the one driving drunk that night, but Brody had used his wealth and influence to frame Maeve and force her out of town to protect his favorite son's future. Now, Brody was using her mother's failing health as leverage once again.

Wyatt closed the distance between them, his brow furrowed in anger. He looked at his father, then at Maeve's terrified face.

"What's going on here, Dad?" Wyatt demanded. "Why did the sound go out?"

Brody put on a fake, charming smile for the crowd. "Just a technical glitch, son. I was just telling Maeve that maybe she should leave before she embarrasses herself any further."
