A Humble Request in a World of Gold

The heavy glass doors of Vanguard Timepieces swung shut, sealing out the noise of the busy city streets. Inside, the showroom was a sanctuary of quiet luxury. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting a warm, golden glow over polished mahogany counters and pristine glass display cases. To most, it was a temple of wealth. To Clara, it was a museum of her husband's soul.

Clara, an eighty-two-year-old woman in a faded knitted cardigan, rolled her wheelchair slowly toward the main counter. Her hands, worn and wrinkled, gripped a small velvet pouch. Inside was a dusty, scratched vintage watch with a faded leather strap. It was a prototype her late husband, Arthur, had built in their tiny garage decades ago, long before Vanguard became an international symbol of prestige.

Liam, a young clerk wearing a dark navy vest and a crisp white shirt, looked up as Clara approached. Unlike the other staff members who had pointedly ignored her, Liam smiled warmly.

"How can I help you today, ma'am?"
he asked, his voice full of genuine respect.

Clara placed the fragile timepiece onto the spotless glass showcase.

"It stopped ticking yesterday,"
she whispered.
"My husband made it. It's the only thing I have left of him."

Before Liam could examine the watch, the sharp click of high heels cut through the silence. Sarah, the boutique’s strict manager, marched over. Her black business suit was flawless, but her expression was cold.

"We don't repair trash here,"
Sarah sneered, glaring at Clara.
"This is a high-end establishment. Please take your clutter and leave."

Liam’s jaw tightened. Defying his manager, he gently picked up the watch, cleaned it with a soft cloth, and fastened it back onto Clara’s wrist.

"To her, it matters,"
Liam said quietly.

Sarah leaned in, her eyes flashing with anger.

"You're going to lose your job over this,"
she whispered menacingly. But Clara calmly reached into her pocket, pulling out an old envelope containing a vintage photograph.
"My husband wore it here,"
Clara said, pointing to the portrait of the store's founder on the wall. Liam gasped.
"Is he the founder?"
Clara looked up at Sarah's pale face.
"And I am his wife."
