Lauren scrambled up from the grass, her face flushed with embarrassment as she noticed the neighbors watching from their fences. She quickly tried to adjust her scrubs and smooth her hair, attempting to regain her composure.

"Ryan! Thank goodness you’re home,"

she lied smoothly, her voice suddenly dripping with false concern.

"You don't understand. Emma has been refusing her physical therapy. She threw herself out of the chair just to get attention! I was only trying to encourage her to stand on her own."

Emma shook her head violently against Ryan’s chest, her silent tears soaking his ceremonial uniform. "That's not true, Ryan," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "She pushed me. She always does this when you're not here."

Ryan stood up slowly, keeping one hand firmly on Emma’s shoulder. His gaze was icy as he looked at Lauren, Emma's own sister, whom they had trusted with her care during his deployment.

"Do you really think I’m that blind, Lauren?"

Ryan asked, his voice deadly quiet. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, displaying a live feed from a small security camera hidden under the patio eave.

Lauren’s face drained of color. Ryan had installed the discreet camera weeks ago after Emma mentioned her mounting anxiety, but he had kept it a secret to see if his suspicions were true. He had watched the entire horrifying interaction live from his military transport vehicle just before arriving. Not only had Lauren been physically abusive, but Ryan had also received bank alerts showing that the recovery fund meant for Emma's therapy had been systematically drained into Lauren’s personal account.
