The Storm Before The Sterling

The air hung heavy and cold, a typical November afternoon in the city where drizzle was the only constant. Outside the imposing, wrought-iron gates of the elite Beaumont Academy, the scene was one of grim urban decay. Cobblestones, slick with rain, mirrored the glow of distant streetlamps, and luxury sedans idled impatiently, their engines a low thrum against the damp quiet. Golden-orange maple leaves, plastered to the curb by the persistent rain, were the only vibrant color in a landscape of grey and black. The atmosphere was thick with the smell of wet earth and exhaust fumes, punctuated by the distant clang of traffic.

Standing against the cold, wet stone of the academy wall was Jack. He looked like any other low-level trainee, his athletic frame stooped in feigned submissiveness. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead by the rain, and his cheap, grease-stained boiler suit offered little protection against the biting cold. He shivered, but beneath the facade of a downtrodden worker, his steel-blue eyes held a sharp, commanding poise.

Then came Vivian Beaumont. The factory foreman, a man whose forty-eight years had carved a cruel sneer onto his weathered face. His stocky build was accentuated by a heavy hi-vis parka, and he clutched a metal clipboard like a shield. Vapor puffed from his breath as he approached, his posture aggressively hunched, radiating an aura of pure malice. He saw Jack, and his lip curled.

"You're useless trash, rookie! Kneel in the mud where an incompetent dog belongs!"

With a violent shove, Vivian sent a heavy steel maintenance crate hurtling towards Jack. The metal slammed into his chest, sending him stumbling backward onto the wet asphalt with a resounding clatter. Water and grime splashed high. Jack braced himself, one knee hitting the wet curb, cold rainwater streaming down his cheek. His jaw clenched, but he remained silent, his mouth firmly closed, his eyes locked on the foreman.
