A Crying Boy Stopped Me and Held Up My Missing Sister’s Unique Gold Pin
Previously: When a young boy stopped Claire on a rainy street, she almost brushed him off. But the unique gold pin in his hand changed everything, leading her to a long-lost family secret.
The Secret in the Shadows
Kneeling on the cold, wet pavement, Claire grabbed the boy's trembling shoulders. The rain continued to fall, but she hardly felt it anymore. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs as she looked into the boy's face, searching for any resemblance to the family she had lost.
"What is your name?" Claire asked, her voice shaking.
"Toby," the boy sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "My mom gave me the pin. She said if she got too sick, I had to find the lady who looked like her. She said you would have the same pin."
Claire felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. Eight years ago, her older sister Eleanor had vanished without a trace while pregnant, escaping a toxic relationship. The family had searched for years before finally giving up hope. Now, this child was standing before her, holding Eleanor's unique heirloom.
"Where is your mother, Toby?" Claire demanded, tears finally spilling over her cheeks.
"She's in the old building down the alley," Toby whispered, pointing toward a dark, narrow corridor between two brick buildings. "But we have to be quiet. The bad man is there. He doesn't let her leave."
A cold dread settled deep in Claire's stomach. The "bad man" could only be Richard, Eleanor's abusive ex-partner. Realizing her sister was alive but in grave danger, Claire didn't hesitate. She grabbed Toby's hand and let him lead her down the dark, trash-strewn alleyway and up the creaking stairs of a dilapidated boarding house.
Toby pushed open an unlocked door at the end of a dimly lit hallway. Inside, lying on a thin mattress, was a frail, pale woman with unmistakable auburn hair. It was Eleanor. She looked terribly weak, but her eyes widened in terror as she saw her sister.
"Claire? No, you have to run!" Eleanor gasped.
Before Claire could step forward, the heavy door slammed shut behind them. Claire spun around to see Richard standing there, locking the deadbolt with a sinister, triumphant grin.
