Previously: When Charles lunged at his elderly mother-in-law in a sunny driveway, he thought his secret was safe. But Margaret held the one truth that would ruin him forever.

The Secret in the Pocket

With Charles pinned against the hood of the charcoal SUV, panting and spitting curses, Officer Jenkins worked quickly to secure the handcuffs. The metallic clinks sounded like a death knell in the quiet afternoon air. Neighbors were beginning to peer through their curtains, whispering about the sudden fall of the neighborhood's golden boy.

Margaret slowly pushed herself up from the concrete, brushing the dust from her green coat with trembling hands. Though her knees shook, a sudden, fierce strength seemed to fill her posture. She was no longer the cowering victim.

"He's crazy, Officer!"

Charles screamed, his eyes darting wildly.

"She's been sneaking into my house, spreading lies to my wife! She's trying to ruin my marriage with her sick delusions! She's a manipulative witch!"

Officer Jenkins ignored Charles's outbursts, turning his attention to the elderly woman.

"Ma'am, are you alright? Why is he accusing you of this?"

Margaret took a deep, shuddering breath and reached into the deep pocket of her green coat. Charles froze, his face suddenly losing all its color as she pulled out a small, amber glass vial.

"I am not a witch, Officer,"

Margaret said, her voice steadying.

"But I am a mother. For six months, my daughter Clara has been mysteriously wasting away. The doctors couldn't find a cause. Charles here claimed it was a rare autoimmune disease. But yesterday, I found this hidden behind the drywall in his basement workshop."

She handed the vial to Officer Jenkins. It was labeled with a highly toxic chemical compound, a slow-acting poison that mimicked the symptoms of chronic organ failure.

"He has been putting this in Clara's daily tea,"

Margaret whispered, tears shining in her eyes.

"I confronted him with it today, right here. That is why he tried to kill me. He knew his perfect life, and his massive life insurance policy on my daughter, was about to vanish."
