Previously: When Lauren searched her late father's scrap yard, she expected old metal. Instead, a desperate sound from a locked wooden crate revealed a shocking secret he kept hidden for years.

The Key to the Past

Lauren’s breath came in short, jagged gasps as she stared at the trembling crate. Another weak thud echoed from within, followed by a faint, raspy whimper. She couldn't just stand there. Clawing at the thick ropes, she sliced her fingers on the rough fibers, but the pain was nothing compared to the adrenaline surging through her veins.

Tucked beneath the heavy coils of rope was a massive brass padlock, rusted but solid. Lauren’s eyes darted to the padlock, and a cold dread washed over her. The pattern engraved on the brass was instantly familiar. It was the exact crest of her father’s old lodge. She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the heavy brass key she had retrieved from her father’s dresser only that morning.

With shaking hands, she slotted the key into the lock. It turned with a heavy, metallic click. She threw the heavy padlock to the ground and began frantically unwinding the ropes.

"Hold on! I'm opening it!" Lauren screamed, her voice cracking.

She grabbed a nearby crowbar and wedged it into the seam of the wooden lid, throwing her entire weight behind it. With a loud splintering screech, the wood gave way. Lauren pulled back the heavy lid, expecting the worst.

Blinking in the sudden shafts of sunlight was a young woman, pale, disheveled, and shivering despite the heat. Lauren gasped, dropping the crowbar. It was Chloe, her younger sister who had supposedly run away five years ago.

"Chloe? Oh my god, Chloe!" Lauren cried, reaching in to pull her sister out. "Did Dad do this to you? Why would he keep you here?"

Chloe clutched Lauren’s flannel shirt, her eyes wide with terror as she looked toward the entrance of the scrap yard.

"Lauren, you don't understand," Chloe whispered, her voice hoarse. "Dad didn't lock me in to hurt me. He did it to hide me. He’s back, Lauren. And he knows I'm alive."

He’s back, Lauren. And he knows I'm alive."
