Previously: When Sarah’s husband forced her to smile for the cameras in a sleek corporate elevator, she thought it was just about PR—until she discovered the chilling truth behind his sudden success.

The Shadow in the Lights

The flashing bulbs of the paparazzi blinded Sarah as Mark wrapped a possessive arm around her waist. He laughed warmly at a reporter's question, playing the part of the devoted husband to perfection. No one in the crowd could see the way his fingers dug painfully into her side, keeping her anchored. Sarah’s smile felt like a cracked porcelain mask. Only hours earlier, she had discovered the truth. She had found the medical records of Mark's predecessor, Mr. Sterling, alongside bank transfers to a private toxicology lab. Mark hadn't earned his promotion to CEO; he had poisoned his way to the top.

As soon as they entered the VIP lounge, Mark was swarmed by eager board members. Sensing her moment, Sarah quietly slipped through the side exit and ran toward the private parking garage. The cold concrete air hit her face, a welcome relief from the suffocating ballroom. She fumbled with her keys, her hands shaking violently. Suddenly, a hand gripped her wrist from the shadows. Sarah gasped, ready to scream, but a familiar voice cut through her panic.

"Sarah, stop! It's me, Arthur," whispered the son of the former CEO.

Arthur looked exhausted, holding a thick manila folder. He explained that he had been investigating his father's sudden illness and had found the same poisoning evidence. He needed Sarah's help to bypass the building's security and get the files to the authorities. But before Sarah could agree, the heavy doors of the garage flew open. Mark stepped out, flanked by two towering security guards. A cruel, confident smile played on his lips as he looked at them.

"I told you to be careful, Sarah," Mark said, taking a slow step forward. "Did you really think you could betray me and get away with it?"
