Previously: When her beloved nanny is accused of a crime she didn't commit, a brave daughter storms the courtroom with a hidden recording that changes everything.

The Voice from the Grave

The courtroom fell into a stunned silence. Evelyn's attorney, Thomas, looked at his client, expecting an immediate denial, but the sheer panic on her face spoke volumes. Judge Eleanor gestured to the bailiff to bring the silver device to the bench. Evelyn tried to protest, her voice rising in a desperate pitch.

"Your Honor, this is highly irregular! This device hasn't been vetted, and this girl is clearly mentally unstable after her father's passing!" Evelyn pleaded, her hands shaking.

Judge Eleanor ignored the protest, raising her hand.

"In a case where a life hangs in the balance, I will hear what is on this recording. Play it."

The bailiff connected the small recorder to the courtroom's audio system. A static hiss filled the room, followed by the weak, raspy voice of Arthur Vance. Everyone gasped; it was like hearing a ghost speak. Arthur sounded frail, but his mind was undeniably sharp.

"If you are hearing this," Arthur's voice echoed through the speakers, "it means my time has run out, and they are blaming Maria. But Maria is innocent. She was the only one trying to keep me alive."

Chloe wept softly as she heard her father's voice again. The recording continued, capturing a quiet argument. The sound of liquid being poured was followed by Evelyn's voice on the tape, cold and calculating. "Drink it, Arthur. It will make the pain go away."

Then, Arthur's voice on the recording spoke again, weaker this time. "I know what you're putting in my tea, Evelyn. I've already sent the blood tests to my lawyer." The tape ended with the sound of a glass shattering and Evelyn whispering a chilling promise to make sure no one would ever believe the nanny.

Thomas, the defense attorney, slowly sat down, his face pale. He looked at Evelyn and quietly packed his papers.

"I cannot represent you anymore, Evelyn,"
he whispered, leaving her standing alone at the defense table.
