The Nightmare in the Hallway

The afternoon sun streamed warmly into Clara’s pristine white kitchen, casting a golden glow over the marble countertops. To anyone looking in, it was a picture-perfect scene of American domestic bliss. Clara was humming a soft tune while prepping dinner, her mind wandering through the mundane tasks of the week. Suddenly, two small arms wrapped tightly around her waist. It was her eight-year-old daughter, Lily, her dark brunette curls spilling over Clara’s apron.

Clara smiled, turning around to hug her daughter back. But the moment she looked into Lily’s eyes, her maternal instincts flared. Lily’s face was pale, her lower lip trembling with a fear that didn't belong in their safe, suburban home. Clara knelt, brushing a stray curl from her daughter's forehead.

"Mom, it felt like someone was in my bed with me."

An icy chill ran down Clara’s spine. She tried to play it off as a bad dream to soothe her daughter, but the sheer terror in Lily’s eyes haunted her. That evening, while Lily slept, Clara decided to check the footage from the nanny cam she had discreetly installed in the hallway and Lily’s room after a recent string of neighborhood break-ins.

Sitting in the dim light of the living room, Clara opened her laptop. Her breath hitched. The footage from 2:00 AM showed a shadow slipping into Lily's room. As the figure stepped into the nightlight's glow, Clara gasped, clutching her chest. It was her husband, Marcus. He was standing over Lily's bed, holding a small glass vial.

Before she could process the horror, the living room door creaked open. Clara looked up to see Marcus standing in the doorway, still dressed in his medical blue scrubs from his late shift at the hospital. His sandy hair was disheveled, his eyes cold and hollow. He walked over, slamming the laptop shut.

"Turn that off or you're gonna ruin everything."
