Richard felt the blood drain from his face as he stared at the familiar handwriting. He had kept this station wagon parked in the garage for years, unable to part with the last physical connection to his late wife. He had no idea that Sarah had tucked a secret away in the glove compartment before her sudden passing.

"Where did you find this, Emma?" Richard asked, his voice barely audible.

"I was looking for the car charger," Emma sobbed, handing him the envelope. "I didn't mean to pry, Dad. But it had my name on it. I opened it... and I read it."

With trembling fingers, Richard slid the folded piece of paper out of the envelope. As his eyes scanned the elegant script, his heart hammered against his ribs. The letter was Sarah’s confession to her daughter, written when she knew her time on earth was short. It revealed a truth Richard had spent nine years trying to protect Emma from: Richard was not her biological father.

The letter explained that Emma's biological father had abandoned them before she was even born. But then, Richard had entered their lives. Sarah wrote beautifully about how Richard had loved Emma from the moment he held her, legally adopting her and fighting a grueling, expensive custody battle against her biological relatives who tried to claim her for inheritance money after Sarah fell ill.

"The letter says you sold your business to keep me," Emma whispered, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "It says you aren't my real dad. Are you going to send me away now that I know?"

The sheer terror in his daughter's voice broke Richard’s heart into a million pieces. He realized she wasn't crying because she felt betrayed by him; she was crying because she was terrified of losing the only father she had ever known.
