The Voice from the Grave

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Diana’s face drained of color, turning a sickly shade of ash. She turned to Charles, her lawyer, grabbing his arm so tightly her knuckles turned white. Charles immediately stood up, trying to regain control of the room. "Your Honor, this is highly irregular and completely inadmissible! This trial is in its final stages, and we cannot allow a disgruntled, estranged daughter to disrupt these proceedings with unverified devices."

Judge Beatrice, however, was not easily swayed. She stared down at the black recorder in Sophie's hand, then at the terrified face of Clara, the young nanny sitting in the defendant's chair, who was weeping silently. "In my courtroom, Mr. Charles, we seek the truth," the judge declared coldly. "If there is evidence that could prevent an innocent soul from going to prison, I will hear it. Bailiff, bring the device forward."

The bailiff took the recorder from Sophie and placed it on the podium, connecting it to the courtroom’s speaker system. Sophie stepped back, her eyes locked onto Diana, who was now trembling. With a nod from the judge, the bailiff pressed play.

Static hissed through the speakers, followed by the sound of heavy, labored breathing. It was Arthur, Sophie’s late father. His voice was weak, but unmistakable. "If anyone is listening to this... I fear my time is short. Diana... she has been swapping my heart medication."

The courtroom went utterly silent. Then, the sound of a door opening played on the recording. Diana’s recorded voice cut through the air, cold and devoid of the grief she had put on display for weeks. "Still trying to write that new will, Arthur? Don't bother. Clara will be blamed. She's the one who prepares your tea every night. Who do you think the police will believe?"

Arthur’s recorded voice gasped, followed by the sound of a glass shattering. "You monster..." he whispered, before the audio cut to static.
