Previously: When eight-year-old Lily ruined her own birthday party by throwing cake at her father, her mother was horrified—until she discovered the devastating truth her daughter was trying to hide.

The Final Reckoning

Julian tried to laugh, but the yellow frosting dripping down his chin made him look pathetic rather than intimidating. "It's too late, Clara," he sneered, stepping closer. "The papers are signed. The escrow closes tomorrow. You and your brat can find somewhere else to live. You have no proof of forgery."

Clara didn't cry. Instead, she took a deep breath and pulled her own phone from her pocket. "I don't need proof of forgery, Julian. The bank’s fraud department already flagged the unusual activity on my mother's estate account three days ago. I've just been waiting for you to show your face in this state so the authorities could serve you."

As if on cue, the front door opened again. Two police officers stepped into the kitchen, accompanied by a man in a business suit—Clara's attorney. Julian’s face drained of color, turning as pale as the remaining cake frosting. The officers informed Julian that he was being detained for identity theft, grand larceny, and forgery.

"Julian Miller, you are under arrest," the officer stated, stepping forward to cuff the cake-covered man.

As Julian was led away in handcuffs, utterly humiliated and smelling of sweet vanilla, Clara knelt down and wrapped her arms tightly around Lily. The birthday party was ruined, but their future was finally safe. Clara looked at her brave daughter, realizing that sometimes, the messiest moments in life are the ones that clean up our darkest secrets. They didn't need a fake father to be a family; they only needed each other to build a real, honest life.
