The courtroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence as the bailiff carefully retrieved the tape recorder from Brooke and placed it on the evidence table. Under Judge Rosemary's strict gaze, the play button was pressed. A harsh static filled the room, followed by the weak, trembling voice of Arthur, Brooke’s late father, recorded just weeks before his sudden passing.

"Megan, please... the medicine tastes wrong. What are you putting in it?"

The tape hissed, and then Megan’s voice came through the speaker, cold, sharp, and completely devoid of the grieving widow persona she had put on for the jury.

"Just take it, Arthur. You’ve lived long enough, and your money belongs to me now. If you try to change the will, I’ll make sure Clara takes the fall. No one will ever believe a hired hand over me."
