The Clock Ticks to Zero

The rotunda emptied in a frenzy of suits and screams, but Matteo stood still, his eyes locked on Daniel. Leo was in the arms of a security officer, being carried toward the exit, his small face a mask of fear.

"Grandpa!" Leo cried, reaching out.

Matteo's heart ached, but he forced himself to look away. He had to end this. He walked toward Daniel, who was backing toward the edge of the room, the device still in his hand.

"You won't stop me," Daniel said, his voice trembling now. "The charges are too well hidden. You can't—"

"I don't need to find them," Matteo said, pulling out his phone. "I have the override codes. I designed the foundation myself."

He tapped a few keys, and a panel in the wall slid open, revealing a security console. Daniel's eyes widened as Matteo typed a series of commands.

"This will disarm the charges," Matteo said, "but it will also lock you in this room."

Daniel lunged at him, but Matteo was faster. He dodged, grabbing Daniel's wrist and twisting it until the device clattered to the floor. The guards were back, surrounding Daniel.

"Take him away," Matteo ordered. "And make sure he stands trial."

As Daniel was dragged out, the room fell silent. Matteo leaned against the console, his legs weak. He had won, but at what cost? He had exposed the corruption in his own empire, and he had nearly lost his grandson.

He walked outside, where Leo was waiting on the steps, his red cardigan now smudged with dirt. Matteo knelt down and pulled him into a hug.

"I'm sorry, Leo," he whispered. "I didn't want you to see that."

Leo hugged him tighter. "It's okay, Grandpa. You're a hero."

Matteo smiled, but it was bittersweet. He had spent years hiding, testing, and watching. But now, he realized, the real test had been his own heart. He had let his fear of betrayal turn him into a ghost, and he had almost lost the only thing that mattered.

He pulled back and looked into Leo's eyes. "I'm done hiding," he said. "From now on, I'm going to be your grandfather first."

Leo grinned, and Matteo felt a warmth spread through his chest. He had rebuilt the bank, but more importantly, he had found his way back to life.

As the sun set over Geneva, Matteo stood with his grandson, watching the city lights flicker on. He knew the road ahead would be hard—rebuilding trust, restoring his legacy. But he also knew that with Leo by his side, he could face anything.

"Come on," he said, taking Leo's hand. "Let's go home."
