Previously: When Colonel Robert Vance arrived unannounced at his daughter Rachel's house, he expected a happy family reunion. Instead, he found her cowering on the floor, terrified of the man she married.

Secrets in the Cardboard Boxes

Robert kept his foot firmly planted near Sean's chest as he reached into his pocket to call local authorities. He had already alerted the military police on his drive over, having received a disturbing tip about his son-in-law. Rachel slowly dragged herself up, clinging to her father's arm as she sobbed. The sight of his daughter in such a state broke Robert's heart, but it also solidified his resolve. He looked around the messy room, his eyes landing on the taped moving boxes.

"What is going on here, Rachel?" Robert asked, his voice softening only slightly as he looked at her. "Why are you packing? And what happened to his head?"

Rachel shook her head, terrified to speak. But Sean, spitting blood from his lip, let out a bitter laugh from the floor.

"Ask your precious daughter, Colonel," Sean sneered. "She’s the one who wanted to run. She’s the one who ruined everything!"

Robert didn't buy the lie. He kicked aside a small box, which burst open to reveal not clothes or kitchenware, but stacks of cash and several forged passports. Robert’s eyes narrowed. As a high-ranking officer, he recognized the counterfeit documents immediately. He realized that Sean’s bandaged forehead wasn't from a simple household accident; it was the result of a high-speed pursuit that had occurred two nights prior, a crash that the local police were still investigating.

Sean had been using Rachel’s identity to embezzle funds from a local military charity that Robert himself patronized. When the scheme began to unravel, Sean planned to flee the country, forcing Rachel to come with him under threat of violence. Rachel had discovered the truth only hours earlier, which had triggered Sean’s violent outburst.

"You didn't just hurt my daughter, Sean," Robert whispered, his voice dangerously calm. "You betrayed my country, my family, and the very men I served with. You are done."
