Previously: Fleeing a false accusation and her late husband’s ruthless family, Catherine seeks refuge in a frozen frontier town, only to find a sheriff willing to risk everything to protect her.

The Shadow of the Past

Inside the warmth of the sheriff’s station, the scent of woodsmoke and hot coffee offered Catherine a temporary reprieve. As she warmed her frozen hands by the hearth, she shared her story with Arthur. She told him of her late husband Charles, his sudden illness, and how his ruthless brother, Silas, had framed her for murder to seize the family fortune. The vintage suitcase she carried held the only proof of her innocence—Charles's secret journals detailing Silas's embezzlement.

Arthur listened in silence, his eyes fixed on the crackling fire. He didn't ask for proof; he simply believed her. For two days, Catherine experienced a peaceful quiet she thought she had lost forever. But the peace of Bitter Creek was fragile.

On the third morning, the heavy oak door was kicked open with violent force, letting in a flurry of snow and a bitter draft. Silas Vance stepped into the room, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. Behind him stood three cold-eyed mercenaries, their hands hovering near their holsters.

"Well, Catherine," Silas sneered, tossing a forged federal arrest warrant onto the desk. "You ran a long way just to be caught in a frozen hole. Hand her over, Sheriff. She’s a cold-blooded murderer."

Catherine shrank back, her heart seizing with terror. Silas had found her, and he brought enough firepower to tear the tiny town apart.

"This warrant isn't worth the paper it's printed on in this territory," Arthur said, his voice dangerously calm as he stood up.
"I have the law on my side, lawman," Silas hissed, his men stepping forward. "Stand aside, or we’ll paint this snow red with your blood."

Terrified for Arthur's life, Catherine begged him to let her go. But Arthur slowly unpinned his tin star and laid it on the desk. He looked Silas dead in the eye, his hand resting on his revolver.
