Previously: When a rain-soaked young woman walked into a cozy jewelry shop to sell her only valuable possession, she had no idea the jeweler would recognize the photo inside.

A Lost Past Unraveled

Clara stared at the elderly jeweler, her chest heaving as panic battled with a sudden, overwhelming sense of familiarity.

"How do you know my name?"
she whispered, backing away until her shoulders hit the cold glass of the door. Arthur’s eyes were brimming with tears as he held the locket open toward her.
"I bought this locket for your mother on our fifth anniversary,"
he choked out.
"And that picture inside... that is you, Clara. You disappeared from the park down the street fifteen years ago. I never stopped looking for you. Not for a single day."

Clara’s mind raced. She had spent her entire life believing she was an orphan, raised by a cold, controlling man named Marcus who claimed he had rescued her from the foster system. Marcus had kept her isolated, moving from town to town, warning her that the world was full of people who wanted to hurt her. Just two days ago, she had discovered a lockbox in Marcus's closet containing her forged identity papers and this very locket. Realizing her entire life was a lie, she had fled into the rainy night with nothing but the clothes on her back and the necklace.

Arthur reached onto a shelf behind the counter and pulled down a dusty, silver-framed photograph. He turned it toward her. It was a picture of a beautiful woman with the exact same dark brown hair, the same nose, and the same green eyes as Clara.

"This was your mother, Sarah,"
Arthur said, his voice trembling.
"She passed away five years ago, her heart broken from losing you. But I knew... I always knew you were out there somewhere."
Clara looked from the photo of her mother to Arthur's tearful face. The walls she had built up for survival began to crumble, but the terror of her present reality suddenly crashed back over her. Marcus was hunting for her, and he wasn't far behind.
