Previously: When a panicked young woman rushed into Frank's jewelry shop to sell a gold locket, he never expected to find a piece of his tragic past hidden inside.

The Chase in the Rain

The girl didn't stop. She bolted through the door, throwing it open so hard the glass rattled. Frank didn't hesitate. Ignoring the ache in his knees, he vaulted over the counter and burst out into the freezing downpour. He saw the flash of her yellow raincoat darting into the narrow alleyway beside the shop.

"Stop! Please, stop!" Frank screamed, his voice cracking with a desperation he hadn't felt in five long years.

He pursued her through the slick, dark alley. The girl tripped over a discarded crate, crashing hard onto the wet asphalt. Before she could scramble back to her feet, Frank caught up and gently but firmly grabbed her arm.

"Where did you get this?" Frank sobbed, holding up the open locket. "Please, you have to tell me! Where is Sarah?"

The girl looked up at him, tears mixing with the rain on her face. She realized he wasn't going to hurt her. Her shoulders slumped in defeat.

"I didn't steal it," she cried out over the wind. "Sarah gave it to me. She told me if I ever got away, I had to find you. She's alive, Frank. But she's trapped."

Frank felt a jolt of hope and terror. The girl explained her name was Ashley. She had been held in a secluded farmhouse miles away by a dangerous group operating an illegal ring. Sarah had helped Ashley escape, giving her the locket to prove her identity to Frank. But before Ashley could explain further, a black SUV with tinted windows turned slowly into the alley, its bright headlights blinding them.

"They found us," Ashley whispered, her face pale with horror. "They're going to take me back, and they'll kill Sarah if they know she helped me."

Frank knew he had only seconds to act. He pulled Ashley behind a row of heavy industrial dumpsters just as the car doors opened.
