A Desperate Stranger Brought My Missing Daughter's Locket into My Shop
Previously: When a panicked young woman rushes into Arthur's jewelry shop to sell a gold locket for fifty dollars, he opens it to find a devastating secret from his past.
Arthur did not hesitate. Despite his age, adrenaline surged through his veins as he vaulted over the counter and sprinted out of the shop. The cold rain hit his face as he chased the girl down the slick pavement. She was fast, but her panic made her clumsy. She tripped near the alleyway, tumbling to the wet concrete.
Arthur caught up to her, breathing heavily, and stood over her. He held the gold locket tightly in his fist.
The Terrifying Truth
"Where did you get this?"
Arthur demanded, his voice cracking with emotion.
"Tell me where my daughter is!"
The girl cowered, covering her face.
"I didn't steal it! I swear I didn't!"
she sobbed.
"Then how do you have it? She would never part with this!"
Arthur yelled. The girl looked around frantically, terrified of the shadows. She leaned in and whispered,
"She didn't give it to me. I stole it from the desk upstairs. I escaped from the basement of a house on the edge of town. There are others... Clara is still there."
Arthur's world spun. His daughter was alive, held captive just miles away. But before he could ask for the address, a dark SUV pulled up to the curb. The headlights blinded them, and the engine roared.
The girl screamed.
"It's him! He found me!"
The passenger door of the SUV swung open. A tall, heavily built man stepped out, his face obscured by a low-brimmed hat. Arthur stepped in front of the girl, shielding her.
"Get out of the way, old man,"
the stranger growled, reaching into his coat. Arthur realized he was outmatched, but he refused to let the only lead to his daughter slip away. He pulled out his heavy brass store keys, ready to fight, while whispering to the girl to run toward the police station down the block.
