The afternoon sun beat down on the red brick facade of the municipal hall, casting long, stark shadows through the stone pillars. A tense crowd gathered behind the metal barricades, their murmurs rising like a swarm of angry bees. Officer James, a seasoned veteran with graying hair and a weary expression, maintained a tight grip on Ashley’s left arm. Beside him, the younger Officer Logan, his light brown hair neatly parted, held her right. Ashley, wearing a simple gray t-shirt and blue jeans, looked small between the two uniform-clad men. Her face was pale, her blonde hair messy, but her eyes burned with a frantic, desperate energy.

For weeks, Ashley had tried to tell anyone who would listen that she was innocent. The embezzlement charges leveled against her were a carefully constructed lie. But nobody listened, least of all the department. As they descended the stone steps, Logan leaned in, whispering something that made Ashley’s blood run cold.

"Keep your mouth shut, Ashley, or things will get much worse for you," Logan sneered.

Panic, sharp and blinding, overtook her. She realized this was her last chance. If she got into the back of that transport cruiser, the truth would die with her. Summoning every ounce of strength she had left, Ashley twisted her body and kicked outward, her sneaker striking Officer James squarely in the chest.

The impact forced James back. Decades of training and pure instinct took over instantly. Before Logan could even react, James lunged forward, swept Ashley’s legs out from under her, and slammed her hard onto the stone pavement.

A collective gasp echoed from the crowd behind the barricades. Ashley landed flat on her back, the breath knocked completely out of her. But as James pinned her down, his hand pressing against her shoulder, Ashley used her one free, handcuffed hand to slide something small and metallic directly into the open pocket of his tactical vest.

"Look at the file..." she wheezed, her voice barely a whisper against the cold stone. "Logan did it."
