A Hero in Black Gloves

The lunch rush at the Golden Griddle Diner was always a chaotic symphony of clattering plates, sizzling grease, and the constant hum of hungry customers. Toby, a nineteen-year-old kitchen worker wearing a dark grey t-shirt and black prep gloves, was sweating over the grill. He was a quiet, hardworking kid who desperately needed this job to help support his family. Standing over him was Marcus, the diner’s bald, notoriously hot-tempered manager, who watched Toby's every move like a hawk, looking for any excuse to cut his hours.

Suddenly, the ambient noise of the diner was shattered by a mother’s terrified scream. At a nearby booth, a young boy named Leo, wearing a bright purple sweatshirt, was clutching his throat. His face was rapidly turning an alarming shade of blue. He was choking, suffocating in plain sight while his father, Arthur, panicked, desperately trying to pat his back, but only making it worse. The surrounding customers froze in shock, paralyzed by fear.

Without a second thought, Toby dropped his spatula and sprinted out of the open kitchen. Marcus’s voice boomed over the chaos, filled with pure malice:

Get back to work, you useless kid! You don't leave your station!

Toby ignored the threat. He reached the choking boy, pulled him up, and locked his arms around Leo's diaphragm. With practiced precision, Toby performed the Heimlich maneuver. On the third thrust, a hard piece of candy flew out of Leo’s throat. The boy gasped, taking in a deep, sobbing breath of air. He was safe.

As Arthur clutched his crying son, Toby took a step back, panting. But before he could process what had happened, Marcus stepped forward, his face red with rage.

You’re fired,
Marcus hissed.
Get your things and get out. You disobeyed a direct order.

But before Toby could speak, Arthur stood up, his eyes blazing with a mixture of anger and deep gratitude. He grabbed Toby’s arm gently but firmly.

You saved my son,
Arthur said. He pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and spoke into it with absolute authority:
This young man just saved a child's life. Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter.

Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter.
