Previously: At her estranged son's somber funeral, wealthy Vivian is approached by a ragged little boy with a shocking claim. The truth behind his identity will change her life forever.

The Token of Truth

Before Vivian could process the boy's words, her sister, Eleanor, rushed forward. "What is going on here? Who let this street child in?" Eleanor hissed, grabbing the boy gently by the shoulder to steer him away. "This is a private service. Sweetheart, you need to leave. We are mourning."

But the boy, who introduced himself in a whisper as Leo, shook his shoulder free. He didn't look at Eleanor; his gaze remained locked on Vivian. "My dad said you would know," Leo insisted, his voice cracking with a mixture of fear and determination. "He said you were his mother, and that you would never let me go hungry."

A collective gasp rippled through the pews. Vivian's heart hammered against her ribs. Could this really be Richard's child? Her son had never mentioned a family, a wife, or a son during their brief, tense phone calls over the years. Vivian had assumed he was living a reckless, solitary life. She felt a wave of skepticism wash over her, mixed with the defensive instincts of her wealthy upbringing. "Child, I don't know who put you up to this," she said softly, trying to keep her voice from shaking. "But my son... my son lived alone."

Without a word, Leo reached deep into the pocket of his torn hoodie. He pulled out a small, heavy object wrapped in a dirty piece of cloth. He carefully unwrapped it and held it out to Vivian. It was an antique silver pocket watch, scratched and tarnished, but instantly recognizable.

Vivian's breath caught in her throat. She took the watch with trembling fingers and turned it over. Engraved on the back in elegant script were the words: "To Richard, Time Never Fades Our Love. Mom." It was the heirloom she had given her son on his graduation dayβ€”the one thing he had refused to return when he walked out of her life. The truth hit Vivian like a physical blow: this ragged boy was her grandson.
