The Diver's Price

The air in Le Gabriel was thick with the scent of old money and expensive perfume. Candlelight danced across the polished mahogany, catching the glint of crystal and the aristocratic sneer on Gregory Thorne’s face. He lounged in his tuxedo, a picture of effortless wealth, utterly at ease in this temple of haute cuisine. Beside him, the hushed clatter of silverware and the gentle murmur of conversation created a symphony of privilege. But beneath the gilded mirrors and the warm glow, a darker note intruded: the slow, deliberate drip of ocean water onto the pristine herringbone parquet floor. Each drop was a stark reminder of the world outside, a world Gregory Thorne had no intention of acknowledging.

Standing before him, a stark contrast to the room's opulence, was Grace Mercer. Her athletic frame was rigid, clad in a salt-bleached neoprene jacket over tactical marine gear. Brine clung to her sun-streaked hair, matting it against her weathered skin, which bore the faint scars of a life lived in harsh elements. Her knuckles, bruised and tight, radiated a coiled power that seemed out of place amidst the refined surroundings. Gregory swirled his vintage Pinot Noir, his eyes fixed on her with patronizing amusement.

“You dragged your bankrupt crew to the bottom of the Atlantic, Grace, and returned with nothing but salt water and excuses.”

His voice dripped with mocking derision. Grace remained silent, her posture unmoving. Sea brine dripped from her jawline, tracing a path down her neck. Her hazel eyes, however, held his gaze with lethal intensity. She let his words hang in the air, a testament to his ignorance. He thought he knew the story, thought he understood failure. He was wrong. The silence stretched, broken only by the rhythmic drip, drip, drip of the ocean’s testament.
