The Storm Before The Treasure

The penthouse dining room of Beaumont Tower was a testament to Vivian Beaumont’s obscene wealth. Seventy-nine floors above the midnight city, the glass walls shuddered violently, the storm outside a furious symphony of wind and rain. Cyan lightning flashed, reflecting in blinding streaks across the polished black marble floors. Inside, crystal chandeliers dripped amber light onto a mahogany table set for twenty, laden with silver cloches and half-empty champagne coupes. The air thrummed with the muffled beat of thunder and the nervous clinking of silver. It was a stark contrast to the man standing at the head of the table: Vivian Beaumont, 49, his silver hair slicked back, radiating an aura of arrogant entitlement in his bespoke velvet dinner jacket. He swirled a crystal flute, his gaze fixed on the figure standing defiantly on the Persian rug below. This was Mateo Cruz, 34, a deep-sea salvage diver, his weathered face and calloused hands a testament to a life spent battling the ocean’s unforgiving depths. His neoprene diving undersuit was still damp, brine clinging to his canvas deck jacket, his knuckles bruised. He remained silent, a statue carved from resilience, as Vivian spoke, his voice dripping with venom.

"Three years squandering my fortune on phantom shipwrecks, Mateo, and you crawl into my black-tie gala smelling of abyssal rot."

Mateo’s jaw clenched, a silent promise of retribution tightening his features. Seawater dripped from his brow, each drop a testament to his dangerous profession. Vivian, sensing his advantage, continued his cruel monologue, tapping his platinum signet ring against the rim of his glass.

"Sign over your salvage rights and beg for cab fare, before my armed security tosses your broke carcass into the harbor."

The lightning outside flashed again, illuminating the predatory sneer on Vivian’s face. Mateo’s breath hitched, a barely perceptible tremor of contained fury. His scarred knuckles tightened around the bundle he held, a bundle that held the key to his vindication. The tension in the room was thicker than the storm outside, a prelude to the inevitable explosion.
