The Reckoning at Dockside

The air in the dockside tavern was as thick and heavy as the Atlantic storm raging outside. Rain lashed against the grimy, reinforced glass of the windows, each drop a percussive beat against the relentless drumming on the skylight above. Inside, the only light came from swaying cage lamps, casting long, dancing shadows across the wet, rough-hewn timber walls. Rusted anchor chains, remnants of forgotten voyages, hung like macabre decorations from the low beams. It was a place where fortunes were lost and desperation was the house special.

Brock Henderson, a man sculpted by arrogance and wealth, leaned against the bar. His charcoal cashmere overcoat was immaculate despite the damp air, a stark contrast to the salt-stained, neoprene-clad figure of Noah Vance standing rigidly before him. Brock swirled a crystal glass of scotch, a mocking grin playing on his lips. His silver-streaked stubble was perfectly manicured, his posture one of utter condescension.

“Three bankrupt years digging through ocean filth, Vance... face it, you’re an evicted bottom-feeder with nothing to show.”

Noah remained silent, his jaw clenched so tight that the muscles bulged beneath the sea-salt crust on his skin. Brine trickled from his brow, stinging his eyes, but he didn’t flinch. Brock saw only the defeat he had engineered. He stepped forward, invading Noah’s meager personal space, and shoved a sheaf of damp papers against his chest. The slap of the documents was sharp, violent.

“Sign the harbor salvage rights over to my yacht club, or my marshals impound your dead father’s trawler by midnight.”

The words were a venomous sneer. Noah’s scarred hands, calloused from years of hard labor, tightened their grip on the sea-duffel slung over his shoulder. The weight of it felt immense, not just from its contents, but from the hopes and dreams it represented. The trawler, his father’s legacy, was about to be seized. But Brock had underestimated the depth of Noah’s resolve, and the treasures hidden beneath the waves.
