Previously: Elena’s daughter was branded illegitimate by a forged DNA test. But inside an antique chess king lay a sealed envelope that would expose Monica’s bribery — and change everything forever.

The Laugh That Followed Them Into the Corridor

Monica’s parting words hung in the air like a poisonous fog. Dominic’s arm tightened around Elena, but she felt the shift in the room’s energy—the officers had paused, exchanging glances. The laughter had been too confident, too knowing.

Elena looked up at Dominic. “What does she mean?”

Dominic’s jaw was set, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. “She’s bluffing. She’s desperate.”

But Elena knew better. Monica was never desperate without a plan.

Later that evening, in the quiet of Dominic’s penthouse suite overlooking the city lights, Elena sat with Mila on a velvet sofa. The chess king lay on the glass coffee table, its hollow base still open, the evidence of Monica’s crimes laid out beside it: the forged paternity report, the bribery receipt, and the notarized will that named Mila the sole heir.

“Mommy,” Mila whispered, tracing the carved horse on the chess king’s side. “Is the bad lady gone?”

Elena pulled her closer. “Yes, baby. She won’t hurt us anymore.”

But even as she said it, her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number, three words that made her blood run cold: “Check the will.”

She picked up the document, her eyes scanning the fine print. It was all there—the clauses, the signatures, the seals. And then she saw it. A single line at the bottom, in a font so small it was almost invisible: “This will is void if the child’s biological mother is found to have committed fraud.”

Elena’s hands began to shake. Fraud. The accusation Monica had been seeding for years, the one Elena had fought so hard to disprove. She had to prove she hadn’t been lying about Mila’s parentage, or the will meant nothing.

Dominic came in from the balcony, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his face etched with concern. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Elena handed him the will, pointing to the line. “This was her failsafe. If she ever got caught, she was going to make sure I went down with her.”

Dominic read it, then cursed under his breath. “We can fight this. My lawyers are the best.”

“But she’s already planted the seed,” Elena said, her voice tight. “The press, the board, everyone’s been waiting for me to slip. One accusation of fraud, and they’ll tear us apart.”

Mila, oblivious to the weight of the words, picked up the chess king and turned it over. A tiny piece of paper fluttered out, landing on the floor. Elena bent to pick it up. It was a receipt—dated three years ago, from a private lab, with Monica’s signature.

Dominic read it over her shoulder. “She paid off the lab to swap the samples. That’s the fraud.”

Elena looked at him, hope flickering. “This could clear my name.”

But the text on her phone buzzed again: “You’ve found it. But you’re too late. The board has voted. You’re out, and Mila’s inheritance is forfeit.”

Elena’s heart stopped. She looked up at Dominic, and for the first time, she saw fear in his eyes.
