The Red-Wax Seal That Made Selena's Smile Flicker

The Georgian courthouse smelled of old wood and fear. Clara knelt near the witness box, her pale blue scrubs rumpled from a night spent pacing the nursery, baby Nico swaddled against her chest. The crescent birthmark on her collarbone seemed to burn under the judge's gaze.

Across the polished table, Selena adjusted her champagne satin slip dress and flicked auburn hair over her shoulder. She looked like she'd already won — and she had, until Clara pulled out the dossier.

"Strip this orphan's family name!" Selena's voice cut through the room, her manicured finger stabbing the air as she slammed down a crib-transfer log. The ink looked fresh, too fresh.

Clara flinched, tears pooling but not falling. She clutched the red-wax-sealed judicial genetic dossier so tightly her knuckles whitened. Nico stirred, letting out a soft coo.

Lorenzo Moretti, the syndicate patriarch in his charcoal double-breasted suit, watched from the head of the table. His dark eyes narrowed, but he said nothing.

"That log is a lie," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "I was there that night. I held my sister's hand while she—"

"Your sister?" Selena laughed, a cold, brittle sound. "The court doesn't care about your sob story. That log proves you switched babies to steal the Moretti inheritance."

Clara's heart pounded. She looked at Lorenzo, then down at the dossier in her hands. It was heavier than paper — it carried a secret that could topple a dynasty.

"Unscrew the wooden chess king," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Selena's smirk faltered. For a split second, panic flickered in her smoky eyes. "What did you say?"

Lorenzo leaned forward, his brow furrowing. "The chess king? What are you talking about?"

Clara's lips trembled. "It's what my sister told me to say if anything ever happened to her. The king in your study, Lorenzo. It's hollow."

The room went silent. Even the judge's clerk stopped writing.

Selena swallowed hard, a bead of sweat forming on her temple. "This is ridiculous. She's stalling."

But Lorenzo reached out, his commanding hand taking the dossier from Clara. He ran his thumb over the red wax seal, then broke it with a sharp crack.

"Hold everything, open this dossier," he ordered, his voice low and dangerous.

Selena's breath hitched. Clara watched, hope and terror twisting in her chest.

Lorenzo pulled out the documents. His eyes scanned the official holographic court DNA report — 99.99% biological match, confirming Nico as his son. Then he saw the second document.

A timestamped CCTV still. In it, Selena was caught on camera swapping nursery crib tags at St. Mary's Hospital — the very night Clara's sister died.

"Here is your bribery receipt," Lorenzo said, his voice like ice.

Selena's face drained of all color. "That's not— I can explain—"

But Lorenzo was already pointing toward the uniformed officers stepping forward. "Everything belongs to my child," he declared, wrapping a fierce arm around Clara's shoulders.

Selena screamed as the officers seized her wrists, but Clara barely heard it. She was staring at the CCTV still, her mind racing.

Her sister's death was no accident. And the truth was only beginning to surface.
