The Text That Changed Everything

I didn't tell Gideon about the text. Not yet. I needed to understand what Selena meant before I dragged him back into the chaos.

But the next morning, the chaos found us. I was making Maya breakfast when my phone rang. It was the hospital—the one where Maya was born.

The DNA Report That Silenced the Woman Who Tried to Steal My Daughter

"Mrs. Mercer," the nurse said, her voice tight, "we need you to come in. There's been an… irregularity with the birth records."

My hand shook as I hung up. Selena had been arrested for tampering, but the system was still compromised. Someone had gotten to the records again.

Gideon met me at the hospital entrance, his face a mask of barely contained fury. "They're saying the original birth certificate is missing," he said, his voice low. "And the security footage from the maternity ward is gone."

"She's erasing everything," I whispered. "She's trying to make it like Maya was never born."

We walked into the administrator's office, where a nervous-looking man in a cheap suit sat behind a cluttered desk. "I'm sorry," he stammered, "but without the original documents, we can't verify the child's identity."

"You have the DNA report," Gideon snapped. "You have the court ruling."

"The DNA report was ruled admissible, but it doesn't establish legal identity. We need the birth certificate to process any inheritance claims."

I felt the ground shift under my feet. Selena had found the one weakness in our armor. She'd taken away the one paper that mattered.

Gideon's phone buzzed, and he glanced at it, his face going white. "It's my lawyer," he said, his voice hollow. "The board is calling for a vote of no confidence. They're saying I'm unfit to lead because of the scandal."

"She's attacking you through the company," I said. "She knows she can't win in court, so she's going after everything you've built."

We stood in the sterile hospital hallway, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, and I saw the cracks in Gideon's armor. For the first time, he looked truly afraid.

"I can't lose the company," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "It's my legacy. It's Maya's future."

"Then we fight," I said, my voice steady. "But we need proof. Real proof that Selena is behind this."

He looked at me, a spark of hope in his eyes. "You have a plan?"

I pulled out my phone and showed him the text. "She's taunting me. She thinks she's untouchable. But she made a mistake—she used her personal number."

Gideon's eyes narrowed. "Can we trace it?"

"I already have a friend at the cyber crimes unit. He's running a trace." I paused, my heart pounding. "But we need to buy time. If she finds out we're onto her, she'll vanish."

We decided to leak a story to the press—a carefully crafted narrative about how Selena was a victim of a misunderstanding, and that the charges were being dropped. It was a lie, but it was the only way to make her think she'd won.

Within hours, the news broke. Selena, emboldened by the coverage, started posting on social media, gloating about her victory. She even tagged Gideon, saying she was "moving on to better things."

It was the opening we needed. Her location was visible in the metadata of one of her posts—a private marina in the Keys.

Gideon and I drove there in silence, the tension thick enough to cut. Maya was safe with a trusted friend, and we were on the hunt.

We found Selena on a yacht, surrounded by people who looked like they'd sold their souls for a tan. She was laughing, a glass of champagne in her hand, the picture of invincibility.

But when she saw us, her smile died. She set the glass down and walked toward us, her heels clicking on the deck. "You just can't let it go, can you?" she said, her voice dripping with venom.

"You took my daughter's birth certificate," I said, my voice calm. "And you think that's enough to destroy us."

She laughed, a cold, brittle sound. "It's enough to destroy him. Without the company, he's nothing. And without him, you're nothing."

Gideon stepped forward, his eyes blazing. "You're wrong. I've got a recording of you admitting to the forgery. And I've got a witness who saw you take the records."

Selena's face flickered, just for a second. "You're bluffing."

"Am I?" He pulled out his phone and played a clip—Selena's voice, clear as day, bragging about how she'd "fixed" the problem. The blood drained from her face.

But then she smiled, slow and cruel. "That recording is useless. It was made without my consent, and it's inadmissible in court."

She was right. We'd been so desperate, we'd overlooked the law. My heart sank.

"But it's not useless to the press," I said, my voice steady. "A little leak, and your reputation is ruined. No one will ever trust you again."

Selena's smile wavered. "You'd destroy yourself too. You'd be dragging the Mercer name through the mud."

"I don't care about the name," I said. "I care about my daughter. And I will do anything to protect her."

For a long moment, we stood there, locked in a battle of wills. Then Selena laughed, a hollow sound. "Fine. Take your precious birth certificate. It's in the safe below deck. But you'll never find the other evidence."

"What other evidence?" Gideon asked, his voice sharp.

"The proof that your father, the great Gideon Mercer, was involved in a bribery scandal that would end his career. I have it, and I'll use it if you come after me."

My breath caught. This was bigger than we'd thought. Selena wasn't just a mistress—she was a blackmailer with a plan years in the making.
