Previously: Elena’s daughter was cut from the will, but a sealed DNA envelope proved her claim. Trevor’s forged report crumbled when Victor read the truth — and the family’s future changed forever.

The Boardroom Was a Ship in a Storm, and I Was the Only One Holding the Wheel

The Kensington boardroom was on the top floor of a glass tower that overlooked the city. The walls were lined with portraits of Victor’s ancestors, all of them staring down like judges. The long mahogany table was filled with faces I didn’t recognize — lawyers, financial advisors, and two of Victor’s cousins who I knew had always sided with Trevor.

Victor led me to the head of the table and sat down. Mila sat in my lap, her small body tense.

“Gentlemen,” Victor said, his voice echoing through the room. “I’m sure you’ve heard about Trevor’s arrest.”

There was a murmur of nods. The lawyer on the right, a thin man with silver glasses, spoke up.

“We’ve seen the news. It’s… unfortunate.”

“It’s more than unfortunate,” Victor said. “It’s fraud. And I have the proof.”

He slid the blue folder across the table. The lawyer opened it, his eyes scanning the pages. He went pale.

“This is… comprehensive,” he said.

“It should be,” I said, speaking for the first time. “My sister kept every receipt, every email, every record of Trevor’s scheme.”

The lawyer looked at me. “And who are you?”

“I’m Elena,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “And this is Mila. She’s Victor’s daughter.”

The room went silent. The cousins exchanged glances.

“That’s a bold claim,” one of them said, a woman with sharp cheekbones and a cold smile. “But we’ve seen the DNA test. It says zero percent.”

“That test was forged,” Victor said, his voice like steel. “The real test is in this folder. It shows a 99.99% match.”

The cousins looked at each other. I could see doubt creeping into their eyes.

“And even if it’s true,” the woman said, “the will requires a court order to verify the claim. You can’t just walk in here and declare her your heir.”

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the letter from my sister.

“This is a letter from Victor’s father,” I said. “In it, he explicitly states that if Trevor ever contested the paternity, the board was to recognize the enclosed DNA test and transfer the trust fund to Mila immediately.”

The lawyer took the letter, his hands trembling. He read it, then read it again.

“This is… a valid legal document,” he said. “Notarized by a federal judge.”

The room erupted in whispers. Victor held up his hand.

“It’s over,” he said. “Trevor is finished. Mila is my heir. And anyone who tries to contest this will find themselves fighting me personally.”

The cousins went quiet. The lawyer nodded slowly.

“We’ll need to draw up the paperwork,” he said. “But it’s clear that Mila Kensington is the rightful heir to the estate.”

Mila looked up at me, her eyes wide. “Does that mean I get a pony?”

Victor laughed — the first real laugh I’d heard from him in years. “Yes, sweetheart. You can have a pony.”

I laughed too, but I was crying at the same time. I held Mila close and buried my face in her hair.

The meeting ended quickly after that. The cousins filed out, avoiding my eyes. The lawyer shook Victor’s hand and promised to expedite everything.

When the room was empty, Victor turned to me, his eyes soft.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “For everything. For not believing you before. For letting Trevor tear us apart.”

“You didn’t know,” I said. “He was good at what he did.”

Victor knelt down in front of me and took my hands.

“Elena, I know we have a lot of time to make up for. But I want to try. I want to be a family.”

I looked at Mila, who was playing with a strand of my hair. I thought about all the years I’d spent alone, raising her, protecting her, keeping her safe from the world that wanted to hurt her.

“I’d like that,” I said. “But we take it slow.”

Victor nodded. “Slow is good.”

He stood up and offered me his hand. I took it, and he pulled me to my feet. Mila giggled as he lifted her onto his shoulders.

“So,” he said, grinning up at her. “What should we do first?”

“Ice cream!” Mila shouted.

“Ice cream it is.”

As we walked out of the boardroom, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. The fight was over. The truth was out. And for the first time in five years, I felt like I could breathe.

But I knew the world would still judge us. The tabloids would have a field day with the story of the diamond cartel and the secret daughter. Trevor would be facing a long prison sentence. The family would never be the same.

But none of that mattered anymore. Because I had Mila. And I had Victor. And we had each other.

That night, as I tucked Mila into bed in Victor’s mansion, she looked up at me with sleepy eyes.

“Mommy, is that man really my daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart,” I said, stroking her hair. “He’s your daddy. And he loves you very much.”

“Good,” she said, yawning. “Because I love him too.”

I kissed her forehead and turned off the light. As I closed the door, I saw Victor standing in the hallway, watching.

“She’s perfect,” he said.

“She’s yours,” I said.

He took my hand and led me to the balcony. The city lights glittered below us.

“Elena,” he said, his voice low. “I know I don’t deserve your trust yet. But I promise you, I will spend the rest of my life making this right.”

I leaned into him, feeling the warmth of his body against mine.

“I know,” I said. “I believe you.”

And in that moment, standing under the stars, I knew that no matter what else happened, we would face it together.

The truth had set us free. And that was worth more than all the diamonds in the world.
