The sterile, white-tiled lobby of St. Jude Memorial Hospital was bathed in bright morning light, but for Arthur, it felt like the coldest place on earth. Clutched in his trembling arms was his six-year-old granddaughter, Lily, whose cheeks were flushed red with a dangerously high fever. Her soft whimpers echoed off the glass walls. Arthur had spent his last dollar on a bus ride to the city's best hospital, hoping for a miracle. Instead, he was met by Marcus, a towering security guard in a dark, imposing uniform.

"No money, no treatment," Marcus said, his voice devoid of empathy as he ushered them toward the exit. "This is a private facility, sir. You need insurance or a deposit."

Arthur gripped Lily’s small, burning hand, his eyes pooling with tears.

"I'll find a way to pay, I swear," Arthur pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "Just help her first, please. She's all I have left."

Marcus merely shook his head, reaching out to guide them through the sliding glass doors. But before he could push them out into the cold morning air, a firm hand clamped down on the guard's shoulder.

"Step back, Marcus," a commanding voice ordered.

It was Dr. Michael Vance, the hospital's chief of pediatric medicine. Clad in a pristine white lab coat, Michael’s sharp eyes darted from the guard to the shivering little girl.

"Bring her inside now," Michael commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. "We don't turn dying children away on my watch."

As Marcus stepped aside, Arthur looked up to thank the compassionate doctor. But as his eyes locked onto Michael’s face, the words caught in his throat. The doctor’s sharp jawline, the distinct hazel eyes—they were painfully familiar.

"Michael?" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling as a tear escaped down his wrinkled cheek. "Is that really you?"

Michael froze, his professional demeanor instantly shattering. He stared at the frail, weathered man before him, searching the worn features of the stranger. A sudden wave of recognition hit him like a physical blow.

"Dad?" Michael whispered, his voice barely audible.

Michael whispered, his voice barely audible.
